Rory McIlroy provided a major boost to his Ryder Cup preparations by birdieing the final hole of his second round at the BMW PGA Championship to avoid the cut at Wentworth.

Needing a birdie at the par-five 18th to extend his tournament, McIlroy produced a brilliant drive and approach iron before two-putting to move to -1 for the round and overall.

The Northern Irishman was once more outshone by playing partner – and European Ryder Cup team-mate – Ludwig Åberg, as the 23-year-old also birdied the final hole to move into a share of the lead with fellow Swede Sebastian Soderberg on -10.

McIlroy’s round, and several others’, finished in almost total darkness as a delay caused by fog earlier on Friday and slow play led to a chaotic and surreal finale.
