MANILA, Philippines—Kianna Dy poured in 23 points and libero Dawn Macandili-Catindig displayed tremendous defense to lead F2 Logistics past Cignal, 25-20, 30-28, 23-25, 25-22, in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference on Saturday at FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan City.
The win gave F2 Logistics a share of the lead in Pool B.
Dy unleashed 20 attacks and three blocks, as Catindig took care of the floor with eye-popping 48 digs and 15 excellent receptions to keep the Cargo Movers unbeaten in two games, tying the Choco Mucho Flying Titans before their July 11 clash at Philsports Arena.
“It’s good for us because this is a short tournament and every game counts. Since the games are close to each other, it’s important we adjust right away,” said Dy before the league takes a 10-day break to give way for the country’s hosting of the Volleyball Nations League next week.
The Cargo Movers were pushed to their limits by the HD Spikers, who leaned on Ces Molina’s 21-point effort including a smart toss to win the third set.
F2 Logistics pulled away with a 20-16 lead in the fourth goal Cignal never wavered and trimmed it to just one after Rachel Anne Daquis blocked Aby Maraño, 21-20. Maraño answered with a quick attack but Majoy Baron’s net touch kept it a one-point game.
Ivy Lacsina, who finished with 13 points, took matters into her own hands and scored back-to-back points to reach match point, 24-21, before Baron nailed the game-winning block on Daquis to end the thrilling two-hour and 33-minute match in front of 4,000 fans.
Baron finished with nine points, including two blocks, and Maraño chipped in eight points. Jolina Dela Cruz had six points on top of 13 digs and 8 receptions, while Mars Alba dished out 16 excellent sets on top of four markers including two aces.
“We have a lot to learn. A win is a win. We are happy about it, but we have to learn from this,” said F2 Logistics coach Regine Diego, who was wearing a beige suit during the game. “We still have a lot of things to fix, adjust, and work on. We can’t stop. It’s not done yet. It’s just the second game.”
Cignal dropped to 1-1 tied with Petro Gazz, which it beat on opening day, in Pool B.
Molina scored 20 kills on top of 18 digs but the HD Spikers gave up 34 errors. Daquis had 13 points, while Ria Meneses had 10 points including three blocks.
They will try to bounce back against the winless Foton (0-2) also on July 11.
