MANILA, Philippines—Karl Eldrew Yulo has projected himself to someday become a better version of his elder brother, two-time world champion Carlos Edriel Yulo.
The younger Yulo began to pave the road to that dream on Monday, claiming his first podium performance in a major international tournament at the ongoing 2023 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Singapore.
Winding up fourth in the preliminary round, the 15-year-old from Leveriza, Manila made it count in the finals of the men’s junior vault and almost ruled the event with 13,775 points that forged a tie with China’s Wang Chengcheng.
The Chinese eventually seized the gold medal following a second-place output among 11 participants in the pre-final phase.
Yulo bagged the silver medal and Kazakhstan’s Altynkhan Temirbek placed third with 13,650 points.
Being groomed to follow the footsteps of his multi-awarded sibling, Yulo finished seventh in the floor exercise (12,000) and 15th in the individual all-around (73,900) featuring all six apparatuses behind rising Japanese stars Masaharu Tanida (79,900) and Rento Noda (79,800).
In women’s junior artistic gymnastics, their younger sister, 14-year-old Elaiza Andriel Yulo is running 34th in the first round of the individual all-around.
Carlos Yulo, who watched her siblings perform, will also see action in the 10-day continental championships, which serves as qualifier to the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium on Oct. 1-8
The Belgium worlds is a qualifier for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
