MANILA, Philippines — After a change of heart, Jared Bahay has chosen to play for the Ateneo Blue Eagles as he is set to make his debut in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament later this year.

The Blue Eagles on Thursday announced that Bahay has decided to study college at Ateneo de Manila.

“I have decided to continue my studies at Ateneo de Manila and play for the Ateneo men’s basketball team. I believe that sustaining my Jesuit education will help unlock and sharpen my potential to the fullest, both on and off the court. Growing up and experiencing Cura Personalis at SHS-ADC, I am confident that their vision and holistic approach will contribute to my growth and maturity as a student, athlete, and person,” said Bahay in a press release.

“I look forward to joining Coach Tab, the team, and the rest of the Ateneo community soon. ‘Dugay nako nagdamgo nga makabot ko sa UAAP, ug pirting lipaya nako nga makaduwa ko para sa blue and white (I’ve been reading to play in the UAAP and I’m very happy I’m able to play for white and blue).”

Bahay, who had first committed to the University of the Philippines, ended his commitment with the team and decided to take his act to Ateneo.

The prized recruit is the reigning Cesafi High School MVP, where he graduated also grade school.

After the news of Bahay’s change of heart early this January, Ateneo Tab Baldwin and team manager Epok Quimpo flew to Cebu to meet with Bahay.

“We’re really happy that Jared opted to come to Ateneo. We’re very excited, knowing that he will be a significant part of our program moving forward,” said Baldwin.

Bahay will be eligible for five years, joining former SHS-ADC Magis Eagles Raffy Celis and Michael Asoro in Ateneo, along with former Batang Gilas teammates Kyle Gamber, Lebron Nieto, Kobe Demisana, and Mason Amos.

Bahay’s addition is a big boost for the Blue Eagles, who ended up as fourth seed and got dethroned by the twice-to-beat UP Fighting Maroons in the Final Four last Season 86.
