MANILA, Philippines—College of St. Benilde lost another key cog for next year’s NCAA season.
After Miggy Corteza, Will Gozum, Robi Nayve, Felipe Marasigan and Ray Carlos all exhausted their playing years for the Blazers, Migs Oczon is also not returning next season but for a very different reason.
With still two years of eligibility under the sweet shooter’s belt, Oczon decided to turn pro after receiving an offer from the Korean Basketball League club Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus.
CSB coach Charles Tiu said Oczon informed the team about his signing with Ulsan “just yesterday.”
“We’ve known about it for a while because we have been in communication even with the team and the team has wanted him since before the season,” said Tiu in a text message to Inquirer Sports on Wednesday.
“But he opted to play for us and defer signing any contract until our season was finished.”
Oczon will enter a team that used to have the services of Filipino import RJ Abarrientos.
Last year, Abarrientos won Rookie of the Year honors with Ulsan before the former Far Eastern University star transferred to the Japan B.League and suited up for the Shinshu Brave Warriors.
Ulsan will now have a new Filipino on the block in Oczon, who averaged 13.17 points, 4.72 rebounds and 2.78 assists per game in his final season for Benilde.
Oczon helped the Blazers make the Final Four where they lost to the top-seeded Mapua Cardinals.
